What makes a fic worth reading?

This is really a question for anyone and everyone:

I've had quite a few thoughts and discussions lately about reading and writing fanfic, and I was just looking over my wips and wondering, how do people decide what fics they want to read? What makes readers keep reading, or stop? At the end of a fic, what feeling would you have that would confirm to you that it was a fic worth your time?

If you are a writer, are there any things you do to make your fics appealing, engaging, and ultimately worthwhile?

A drabble called "Flowing"

I was scrolling through the voyager writing game posts a few days ago and came across this one and thought I'd give it a try:
Write a drabble (100w) from the perspective of a character you've never written before and inspired by the word "awe".

I'm not giving any tags here other than to say it expands a memorable scene in a Voyager episode. The rest, you will have to read to figure it out! 😉😉

fic: Love

For the past month or so I've been in a writing slump, but today I bring you a little chapter! My dear friend Spengie is writing a wonderful fic called It Wasn't Love which tells the story of Kathryn Janeway's relationship with her first officer from her point of view. I, being myself, mentioned to Spengie that I would love to read the story from Chakotay's point of view. Spengie, being an awesome friend, suggested I write that myself, and I think I surprised her a little bit by doing just that. Or starting to at least--she's a couple of seasons ahead of me at this point! Reading It Wasn't Love along with this story will give you both sides, and I highly recommend it for a full experience!! but isn't essential, both of our fics can stand alone.

Title: Love

Notes: A super big thank you to all my friends who pulled me out of my writing slump by giving feedback, betaing, and editing this little chapter: jellybeansarecool, Voyagirl47, loopdeloup, and thank you for all of the above mentioned things plus for this inspiration Spengie! Love all of you!

J/C Fic Recommendation #2: Time and Distance

This second recommendation is a fic that made me think "where has this been all my life"?! I bring you Time and Distance by northernexposure

Author's summary:

How far does one have to go to find the way back? Set late in Voyager's journey, post-Equinox.

My thoughts:

You know when you read a book, and you just can't stop reading, and if you have to stop the story is in the back of your mind all the time? The kind of story that colors your life as you read it? I read Time and Distance last weekend and it was just like that. A friend recommended it to me saying it's her favorite fic, but at first I balked at the length (11 chapters, 24060 words). I am so glad I started reading it anyway! The story was transcendent and easily among the best fics I've ever read. Northernexposure's beautifully poetic writing is woven into a plot that just keeps getting better as it progresses. Although it has an appropriate amount of angst, I found the entire story fulfilling and satisfying. The depth of feeling made me cry at one point--not from sorrow but from pure intensity. This one is so good it's distracting, and I was so glad I read it after it was completed, because I don't think I could have waited for more chapters to be written and posted. I already want to read it again! It's a wonderful way to spend a weekend or a holiday or, if you must, a few evenings.

J/C Fic Recommendation #1: a new J/C classic

For my very first rec, I bring you The Still of the Night by Spengie

Author's summary:
I knew the pull well, the desire to fold her into my arms so strong sometimes I shook with the effort not to. It had been different, once, I remembered.

A short missing scene from Basics I and II. Reference to Resolutions.

My thoughts:
I've read this twice now and it one of those fics that is even better the second time.

Spengie chose to write in first person, which fits this scene just perfectly. Chakotay's perspective allows the reader to see and feel Spengie's painful yet beautiful view of Kathryn Janeway. The insight into both characters, the eloquence use of words, and the setting all combine to create an exquisite look at the foundations of the J/C relationship.

This is 1345 words that captures the heart of their story, both the conflict and the love. A J/C classic for all time.

Hi!

Hi all!

I'm here because cherryatmidnight says it's a cool place to be! I thought I'd start with my bio:

I'm a lifetime trekkie and longtime otp J/C shipper! I love to read, write, and comment on fanfic.
I write for hope. I hope people will read my stories and feel like there's light at the end of the tunnel, that life can be better than it is, love can prosper, people can change. You'll find some angst, but so far it always turns out well in the end. The rainbow is more beautiful after the storm, after all. Happy reading!

I'm totally new to dreamwidth so any suggestions or tips you want to share are welcome :) My first idea is to post a series of fic recs, so if you love to read J/C fic stay tuned!

Ta-ta for now!
